In 1985 a network master plan was formulated by the founding member telephone companies of PalmettoNet. These companies joined forces with a common goal of being capable of offering their customers and the Interexchange carriers the most advanced telecommunications technology available for the foreseeable future. The plan provided the guidelines for the network with became commercially available and operational in the spring and summer of 1986. PalmettoNet’s role was to serve as a “carrier’s carrier” so as not to be placed in competitive position with any of its potential customers.
The founding PalmettoNet members were Rock Hill Telephone, Lancaster Telephone, Fort Mill Telephone, Heath Springs Telephone, Farmers Telephone Cooperative, Inc., Hargray Telephone Company, Bluffton Telephone Company, Home Telephone Company, Horry Telephone Cooperative, Palmetto Rural Telephone Cooperative and Sandhill telephone.
Segments made available at the time included points of presence at Myrtle Beach, Florence, North Sumter, Rock Hill, Columbia and Charleston, SC. SCANA Communications, a subsidiary of SCANA Corporation contributed to one of the original routes in 1985. Since then, they have been a significant valued partner.
In 1999 PalmettoNet and SCANA entered into a deeper relationship and built the network out to Greenville and Spartanburg, SC as well as Fayetteville and Raleigh, NC. Also during this same time frame PalmettoNet accomplished a major milestone by offering their network with 100% diversity ring protection.
PalmettoNet has remained profitable since inception. We have added many new customers, new technology and continue to grow in technology daily. PalmettoNet is supported operationally by it’s members in the member territory. However, we have grown from an original three direct employees to an average of 25 to accommodate our growth.
PalmettoNet connected our latest member, Chesnee Telephone, in November 2008.
